Consisting of about 36-square-miles and with a population of just over 600, the rugged and remote outpost of Juan Fernández are a virtually unexplored gem located just over 400 miles off the coast of Chile in the Pacific. The islands were first discovery in 1563 and later became well known for being the home of shipwrecked sailor Alexander Selkirk for four years and the inspiration for the novel, Robinson Crusoe. The islands largely remain unspoiled and offer a series of lush hiking trails and endemic Juan Fernández fur seals. Due to its natural abundance, in 1977 the islands were named a UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve.
