Accommodation for the night is in the well-known Hotel Albert.
A flight will be taken the next day, to Constantine, to visit the nearby UNESCO World Heritage site of Timgad. We walk along the streets, temples and library along with a visit to the Arch of Trajan. Before retiring for the day, a visit is made to the famed suspension bridges of Constantine. The next day sees us off on a visit to Djemila to explore basilicas, temples and mosaic museums. We make our way back to the coastal city of Algiers. More UNESCO sites are visited here the next day which are Casbah of Algiers and Tipasa.
To visit Oran, Algeria’s second largest city, we take a flight. We take in the Merinid Sultan Abou, Beys Palace, a fort which has many reinforcements over the centuries, turning it into a structural marvel. Overnight is done in Oran with a next day flight to Tlemcen. The city is a treasure chest of Muslim culture with visits being made to a number of mosques in the area. An added day in Oran will be spent touring the harbour and city central after which there is a train ride to Bechar.
Once in Bechar, our Algeria tour takes us to Taghit, an oasis town, with old world charm situated in the middle of the desert. Even more exciting in the town, is exploration of the Grand Erg Occidental to view cave paintings. While still in the oasis town a visit is made to the nearby Beni Abbes to sight-see the end of the oasis and the beginnings of the sand dunes. The area also houses the Sahara Museum.
A small trip to Timimoun the next day will have the group visiting the red caves and abandoned villages and many other ancient sites of the area. We travel to Ghardaia by road vehicle and is a long trip. There are loads of stops along the way though, for lunch and also for the group to admire the mountains, flatlands and salt lakes along the way. On arrival in Ghardaia we visit the “city of a 1000 domes”. The next day, more exploration is done here to UNESCO site M”Zab Valley, mosques, date farms and the market square.
After a flight to Djanet we meet camels and camel drivers and settle in for a night in the remote desert. Camels are used to cross the desert and explore more of the canyons. The great brown landscape and its rock arches of Tikoubaouine is the next stop. Sights of green will entrance the group upon arrival in Essendilene along with waterfalls, a welcome sight after the desert vibe. The visit to Tassili sees us enjoying the outdoor life for the final time on the Algeria tour before heading to Djanet to visit a final few must see museums and ksars. The final night of the Algeria tour is spent here with a flight to Algiers early the next morning for flights back home.
